My Art, Me, Myself and I...

Sat Feb 19, 2005, 5:04 PM
February 20, 2005 (to come...shortly)
Two years later...Who am I?? Good question...does anyone really know who they really are? I once had a pastor tell me I was an enigma to him...and realized that I was also an enigma to myself...don't know who I am, what I'm doing, (besides surviving) why I'm here, or what I am suppose to be doing...I do know I love life, am not an ambitious guy, (not interested in being a workaholic to have millions of dollars...I find that i do not fit in well with the rich and famous) I love people, am not a bigot, nor do I understand them, my goal at the moment (which I cannot do, but maybe soon) is to just "hit the highways and bi-ways" and travel where ever the road takes me...maybe down south in the winter...lay around the beaches...play my guitar (I'm not good at it...bit I have written the lyrics to about 40 songs...(five or so that I really like) the rest...probably yuck might describe them...or maybe they are just too personal for me...
For the record I am from Lethbridge, Alberta...however, I have been here on the West Coast (Vancouver, BC for so many years I now call it home...(although a part of me will always remain back in Lethbridge...) and I do get back there every few years. Things that I have worked at: Haying, working on a section gang for the CPR Railway although at the time I was to skinny to lift a sledge hammer so I was just given the spikes to lay down for the other workers to pound into the track bed) bus boy, car lot boy, delivery driver, left for Vancouver to become a waiter on the CPR Dining cars, travelling through the Rockies from Vancouver to Winnipeg...which was a pretty cool job...if you've never travelled through the Rocky Mountains by train, you gotta do it...it is spectacular...waiter for half day at the Westin Bayshore Hotel in Vancouver...had a splitshift, and while having a beer for lunch met two lovely ladies who invited me to a party, which I accepted...not getting back to work...never did go to pick up my paycheck...sold mens wear, made to measure suits, became Advertising Manager at a Department Store chain, my first experience designing advertising...and found I really enjoyed it. Went on to work for (Can I say Conrad Black and David Radler's chain of Newspapers, in advertising...as a salesman, but my expertise and enjoyment was in designing the Ad's...Page cover design, Political cartooning...(50% of the poliiticians loved me, the other 50% hated me) it was a good gig...did that for about 8 years...prior to all this I had attended the Banff School of Fine Arts when I was 13 for a month in August of that year, the rest of the class were all seniors from california or the likes, except for one beautiful lady from Venezuela (who had a five year old son) that I had a big crush on...(such visons of wonders did I have on my mind) but it ended there...so it was a very boring month for me...my next art school I went to was The Kootenay School of Art in nelson, BC for the next three years...now that was an experience!! It was the days of Draft dodgers, hippy's...pot, 1969...what a year!! I even became the President of the Student Body...but soon after had to resign or be thrown out of school...I have no idea why, except I was told that the DO (Director) thought I was trying to over throw the school....that was the first I had heard of it...and no truth to it at all...so, I resigned and finished my studies...which were very important to me of course...it was after Art School that i got into Advertising in Newspapers...another good gig...Produce Delivery Driver.(5 ton Bus) big Coach Bus, School bBuses, BC Transit Bus in Port Moody, Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam...left for a couple of years..am now back driving again....after a year of driving Limousine (Corporate and Movie Industry Clients) which was enjoyable and interesting...but to mentally draining...I was exhausted most of the time...1AM callings for 4AM pick ups at Whistler Resort...I have not done any art for some years( got wiped out in a car accident by soome goofy driver...no broken bones...but soft tissue injury, short term memory loss, which was the most damaging, and the reason I couldn't do any art for about five years, and just when I was ready to get involved with my art again, I was rear ended on a highway by this guy doing 30K and all my symtoms came back again...so another few years slid by...but I am close to getting back to my art again...I am very interested in doing oils again...(more to come at a later date)

The Original Starving Artist... I've used that "nick name" for thirty years...and have had art published with that "moniker" or whatever...I come by it "honestly" I never sold art I did for my own enjoyment, I'm an enigma to myself & others.
